The Benefits of Installing a Pool Safety Cover

Backyards are made better by pools. Backyard pools are made better - and safer - with the right accessories. Take protective covers, for example. It's crazy to think about how much value one single product can bring to a purchaser. This article will elaborate on that, outlining the benefits of installing a pool safety cover in your splash space.

Backyard Pool Covers, Explained

Out of all the safeguards someone can implement in their backyard swimming pool, backyard pool covers represent one of the most effective and versatile safety investments available. A pool cover is a protective barrier designed to completely cover the water surface when the pool is not in use.

Modern pool covers come in several varieties, each serving different primary functions:

Safety Covers

Safety covers are engineered to support significant weight (typically 485+ pounds) and prevent accidental falls into the water. These covers use a mesh or solid material stretched taut across the pool and anchored to the deck with springs and hardware.

Thermal Covers

Thermal covers focus primarily on heat retention and energy efficiency. They’re great for helping maintain water temperature in addition to safety.

Automatic Covers

Combining safety and convenience, automatic covers retract on their own. Pool owners often pay more for these products wanting the convenience of being able to deploy them at the touch of a button.

The Benefits of Installing a Pool Safety Cover

After putting so much money into the perfect pool, you're probably hesitant to spend any more on what seems like an optional accessory. But trust us when we say the benefits of installing a pool safety cover make additional investment worthwhile.

Winter Protection and Cost Savings

Winter pool safety covers provide more than just peace of mind—they help protect your pool investment throughout the off-season. By shielding the pool from snow, ice, and organic debris, a safety cover reduces the risk of contamination that would otherwise lead to higher maintenance and costly spring cleanups. Keeping your pool sealed over the winter also helps prevent algae growth and minimizes chemical imbalance, which means less effort and expense when it's time to reopen.

Structural Integrity and Equipment Longevity

A winter safety cover plays a vital role in preserving your pool’s physical condition during months of inactivity. By preventing snow, ice, and heavy debris from entering the pool basin, the cover helps avoid unnecessary strain on the liner, walls, and filtration system. That means less wear and tear on expensive equipment and fewer repairs come spring. In harsh Ontario winters, this layer of protection helps ensure your pool is ready to go when the warm weather returns.

Reliable Off-Season Safety

A winter safety cover isn’t just about maintenance—it’s a life-saving feature. Designed to support the weight of children, pets, or even a fully grown adult in some cases, a properly installed winter safety cover serves as a strong barrier against accidental falls. It offers critical protection when your pool is unattended for months at a time, giving homeowners an extra layer of security through the most dangerous part of the year for pool-related accidents.

The State of Pool Safety in North America

Pool safety is a critical public health concern in North America. Drowning consistently ranks among the leading causes of unintentional injury-related death. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, over 4,000 people die from drowning annually in North America every year.

While residential pools offer relaxation and recreation, they also come with serious safety responsibilities—especially in suburban communities where private pool ownership has grown significantly. Despite decades of awareness campaigns and evolving safety regulations, water-related incidents still occur at an alarming rate. For every child who tragically drowns, five more receive emergency care for non-fatal submersion injuries, some of which can lead to long-term health consequences.

These ongoing challenges are often linked to gaps in safety infrastructure, uneven enforcement of pool regulations, and a general underestimation of the risks associated with unsupervised water access. Addressing these factors through proactive planning and community awareness can make a meaningful difference.

Many residential pools lack proper pool covers. It's every homeowner's moral and legal responsibility to outfit their backyard with the precautions necessary to prevent split-second accidents.

How to Keep Your Pool Water Crystal Clear All Summer

Having the greenest front lawn on the block is an achievement, sure. But what about the bluest backyard pool? Now that's impressive. Where anyone can sprinkle grass seed here and there, clean pool water takes work and consistency. In this guide, we explain how to keep your pool water crystal clear all summer - starting with understanding the science behind water chemistry, implementing proper filtration practices, and following a regular maintenance schedule.

What Keeps Your Pool Water From Being Crystal Clear?

Solving any problem starts with understanding its cause. When it comes to murky pool water, there are several potential starting points:

Poor Filtration

When your pool's filtration system isn't working properly, it fails to remove suspended particles that cloud the water. This can happen due to clogged filters, insufficient pump power, or inadequate run times. A properly sized filtration system should cycle all pool water at least once every 24 hours. Aim for 8-12 hours of daily operation during swimming season.

Chemical Imbalances

Regular testing and adjustment of chemical parameters is essential for crystal clear water. It's truly a science; when pH levels drift outside the ideal range (7.2-7.8), chlorine becomes less effective at sanitizing. Similarly, improper calcium hardness, total alkalinity, or chlorine levels can lead to cloudy water, algae growth, and even damage to pool surfaces and equipment.

Algae Growth

Algae is one of the most common culprits behind cloudy, discoloured water. These microscopic plants multiply rapidly in warm conditions, especially when sanitizer levels drop. Green algae is the most common variety, but you might also encounter mustard algae (yellowish-brown) or black algae, which is particularly stubborn.

Organic Contaminants

Swimmers introduce a variety of organic materials into pool water—body oils, sunscreen, cosmetics, sweat, and even urine. Compounds combined with chlorine form chloramines, which cloud water and cause that distinctive "pool smell" no one likes. They can irritate the eyes and skin, as well.

Poor Circulation

Even with excellent filtration and proper chemistry, dead spots in circulation can harbour contaminants and promote algae growth. This is a big problem with pools with complex shapes or multiple deep sections.

Circumstances Matter, But So Does Consistency

The above causes of unclear pool water are just that - causes. Additional aggravating factors have the capacity to make it worse. Some may be out of your control, like sudden weather changes, nearby construction projects kicking up dust, landscaping activities in your neighbourhood, or the location of the pool itself. Yet some issues can be prevented with proper planning and regular maintenance. Being proactive about testing water chemistry, upgrading filtration equipment when necessary, and establishing consistent cleaning routines can significantly reduce the likelihood of clarity problems, even when environmental factors try to work against you.

How to Keep Your Pool Water Crystal Clear This Summer

Our number one suggestion for all pool owners is to print out a calendar of duties for the summer season. Every circumstance is different. Generally speaking, though, everyone can benefit from the following measures.

Adopt Standard Best Practices

Prevention is far easier than treatment. Maintain proper chlorine levels (1-3 ppm) and supplement with algaecide as needed. For existing algae problems, shock treatment followed by brushing and vacuuming is usually necessary. Severe infestations may require multiple treatments and possibly draining and acid-washing the pool.

Set Systems Up Right

Ensure your return jets are properly positioned to create a gentle circular flow. Consider adding a secondary circulation system like a pool vacuum or bottom drains if your pool design creates problematic areas. Manually brushing walls and floors weekly helps dislodge particles from areas with minimal water movement.

Control What You Can

Encourage pre-swim showers, implement regular bathroom breaks for children, and consider using enzyme-based products designed to break down organic contaminants. Regular shocking (super-chlorination) helps eliminate chloramines and restore water clarity.

How to Open Your Pool for the Summer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Warm weather is just around the corner, and that only means one thing: pool season is almost here.

Before diving into your pool on a hot summer day, you need to open your pool properly.
A smooth and safe opening helps you avoid costly repairs, keeps your pool equipment in top shape, and sets the stage for a stress-free season.

Get Your Pool Ready With Our Helpful Step-by-Step Guide

One of the best times to open your pool in Ontario is in late spring when the temperature is around 70℉ (around 21℃). We can’t wait for those temperatures to arrive, and we know you can’t either! Once they do, here’s what you can expect to do next:

1. Remove and Clean the Pool Cover

Start by clearing off any debris, water, or leaves that have collected on your pool cover. Use a pool cover pump or shop vac to remove standing water, and a soft broom or leaf blower to clear off leaves and twigs. Be careful not to let any of this debris fall into the pool when removing the cover. Once the surface is clear, carefully remove the cover, lay it out flat on a clean surface, rinse it with a hose, and allow it to dry completely (this prevents mildew buildup during storage).

2. Reinstall Pool Equipment and Accessories

During winterization, certain parts of your pool’s equipment were likely removed or covered for protection. Now’s the time to bring them back:

  • Skimmer baskets
  • Return jets and directional eyeballs
  • Ladders, rails, and diving boards (tighten all bolts securely)
  • Automatic pool cleaners or robotic units (if you use them)

Make sure all parts are clean, in good condition, and properly secured. Next, inspect all equipment before reconnecting them, such as the:

  • Pump and filter system: Check for visible cracks, leaks, or signs of wear.
  • Plumbing lines: Remove winterizing plugs and reconnect hoses or pipes. Be sure all fittings are tight.
  • Heater (if applicable): Visually inspect it and confirm that all connections are secure.

Once everything is in place, prime the pump by filling it with water (if needed), then turn it on and check for proper operation. Look out for leaks or unusual noises and be prepared to shut it down if anything seems off.

3. Fill the Pool to the Right Level

After months of inactivity, your pool water level has likely dropped due to evaporation or intentional drainage during closing. Use a garden hose to refill the pool until the water reaches halfway up the skimmer opening. This ensures your pump has enough water to function correctly and helps with circulation once everything is running.

4. Give the Pool a Good Cleaning

Start by removing any visible debris from the water using a skimmer net. Then brush down the walls and floor of the pool to loosen dirt and algae that may have settled during the winter. Finally, vacuum the pool thoroughly, either manually or with a robotic cleaner. A thorough cleaning will make your water more manageable for balancing later and improve filtration efficiency.

5. Run the Filtration System

Once your pump and filter are running and your pool is clean, let the system run continuously for at least 24 hours. This helps to circulate the water and capture any remaining debris that may have been missed during manual cleaning. It also helps prepare the pool for the chemical treatment phase, which should be done after the water has had time to circulate.

6. Check for Leaks or Issues

With the system running, take time to walk around the pool and equipment pad and inspect for leaks. Check for:

  • Drips or puddles near the pump, filter, or heater
  • Air bubbles returning to the pool (a sign of suction-side air leaks)
  • Any unusual sounds from the motor or filter

Catching issues early can save you both time and money, and give you peace of mind once you start swimming.

Why Fiberglass Pools Are a Great Choice for Canadian Homes

A backyard pool is a dream for many Canadian homeowners, offering a private retreat for relaxation and family fun. When choosing the right type of pool, durability, maintenance, and cost are important factors to consider, especially in Canada’s unique four-season climate.

Fiberglass pools stand out as an excellent choice for Canadian homes due to their longevity, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance. If you’re considering installing a pool, here are some reasons why a fiberglass pool might be the best option for you.

Top Reasons to Consider a Fiberglass Pool in Canada

1. Built to Withstand Canadian Winters

One of the biggest concerns for pool owners in Canada is how their pool will hold up against freezing temperatures. Fiberglass pools are incredibly durable and flexible, meaning they can withstand seasonal temperature fluctuations without cracking or warping. Unlike concrete pools, which are prone to cracking due to freeze-thaw cycles, fiberglass pools are designed to expand and contract with changing temperatures. This makes them a low-maintenance and long-lasting option for Canadian homeowners.

2. Low Maintenance and Easy to Clean

One of the biggest advantages of fiberglass pools is their smooth, non-porous surface. Unlike concrete pools, which have rough, porous surfaces that trap algae and bacteria, fiberglass pools resist algae growth. This means you’ll spend less time scrubbing and adding chemicals to keep the water clean.

Since fiberglass pools require fewer chemicals and less frequent cleaning, they’re not only easier to maintain but also more cost-effective in the long run. If you want a pool that allows you to spend more time swimming and less time maintaining it, fiberglass is a fantastic choice.

3. Quick and Hassle-Free Installation

If you’re eager to enjoy your pool as soon as possible, fiberglass pools are the way to go. Unlike concrete pools, which can take several months to construct, a fiberglass pool can often be installed in as little as a few weeks. Since fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured, the installation process is much faster and more efficient than other pool types.

This means less disruption to your backyard and a quicker timeline for you to start enjoying your new pool. For Canadian homeowners who want their pool ready for summer, a fiberglass pool provides a stress-free installation experience.

4. Energy Efficiency and Lower Heating Costs

Fiberglass pools naturally retain heat better than concrete or vinyl pools. Their insulating properties help keep the water warmer for longer, which is a major advantage in Canada’s cooler climate. This means you’ll spend less money on heating costs, making fiberglass pools an energy-efficient and eco-friendly option.

If you enjoy swimming in warm water but don’t want to run up high energy bills, a fiberglass pool is an excellent investment. You can also pair it with a solar cover or energy-efficient heat pump to further reduce heating costs.

5. Long-Lasting and Cost-Effective

While fiberglass pools may have a slightly higher upfront cost compared to vinyl liner pools, they offer better long-term value. Fiberglass pools can last 25 years or more with minimal maintenance, while vinyl liner pools typically require liner replacements every 5-9 years.

Since fiberglass pools don’t require resurfacing or liner replacements, you’ll save thousands of dollars over the life of the pool. This makes them an economical choice for homeowners who want a durable, long-lasting pool without frequent repairs.

6. Comfortable and Stylish Design Options

Fiberglass pools offer a smooth, comfortable surface that feels great on the feet, unlike rough concrete, which can cause scrapes and irritation. Modern fiberglass pools also come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes, allowing homeowners to choose a style that fits their aesthetic preferences and backyard space.

From sleek modern designs to freeform resort-style pools, Latham fiberglass pools offer versatile design options to complement any home. Many fiberglass pools also come with built-in features like steps, benches, and tanning ledges, making them even more functional and stylish.

7. Environmentally Friendly Choice

For eco-conscious homeowners, fiberglass pools are a sustainable choice. Since they require fewer chemicals and less energy to heat, they have a lower environmental impact compared to concrete and vinyl pools. Additionally, their durability means they don’t need to be replaced as often, reducing waste over time.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly pool option, fiberglass is a fantastic solution.
