When to Repair vs. Replace Pool Equipment: A Cost Analysis

Every piece of pool equipment has a life expectancy - something you’ve probably already considered when you purchased your pool! But what you may not have considered is the cost differences between repairing or replacing that piece of equipment, whether it’s a pool pump, pool heater, pool liner, or more.

Breaking Down the Costs of Repairing & Replacing Pool Equipment

Have you noticed your pool water is turning a different colour? Is your pool pump making incredibly loud noises? Are there physical cracks or holes in the pool’s liner? If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to have a pool technician inspect it and recommend any necessary repairs or replacement options as well as the breakdown of associated costs.

Pool Pumps

Repairing: The cost to repair a pool pump can vary depending on the extent of the damage and the type of pump you have. Some common issues that may require repair include clogged filters, leaking seals, or malfunctioning motors. In some cases, a simple fix such as replacing a gasket or cleaning the impeller may be all that is needed, costing around. However, more serious problems like a motor replacement or a complete pump overhaul can cost upwards of $500.

Replacing: The costs associated with a new pool pump will vary depending on the size of your pool, the pool pump type you require or prefer, the brand, and any warranty packages. You should expect to pay anywhere from $900 to $2000, not taking into account labour and installation costs or added warranties.

Pool Heaters

Repairing: The cost of repairing a pool heater can vary depending on the type of heater and the extent of the damage. The most common issues that can arise with pool heaters include leaking, clogs, faulty thermostats, and electrical problems. Each of these issues can require different parts and labour to fix, which can impact the overall cost of the repair.

Replacing: New pool heaters can range from $3,000 to $5,000, or more, depending on the type - gas, electric, solar, or heat. The size of your pool will also play a large factor in the cost of your pool heater - the bigger your pool, the greater the capacity of the heater you’ll require, and the greater the capacity, the more expensive the heater is.

Pool Liners

Repairing: It’s possible to repair a pool liner depending on the extent of damage. Small holes or tears can be patched using a pool liner kit, which can start at $20+. However, for larger tears or more significant damage, it’s necessary to contact a professional. In this case, repair costs can range anywhere from $300 to $2,500, or more.

Replacing: The cost of replacing a pool liner can vary significantly depending on various factors such as the size and shape of the pool, the type of liner material, and the complexity of the installation process. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to upwards of $5,000 or more. This doesn’t include the costs of installation and labour, or additional features (if applicable) such as benches or stairs.

Pool Filters

Repairing: It’s not typically recommended to repair a pool filter. If there are cracks in the filter, you’ll need a new one. There are a few different types of filters, each one coming with a different life expectancy - filter cartridges (7-10 years), sand filters (10-15 years), and glass filters (10-15 years). The longevity of pool filters will also depend on how well you clean and maintain them.

Replacing: The cost of a new pool filter can vary depending on the type, size, and quality of the filter. On average, the cost of a new pool filter can range from $1,500 to $2,000 and up.

Pool Covers

Repairing: If you have a basic pool cover, you can repair minor tears or holes yourself with a patch kit, typically costing around $20+. However, for more major repairs, particularly if you have a higher-end pool cover, repairs can cost upwards of $1,000 or more.

Replacing: The cost of a new pool cover will vary depending on size and type. For safety pool covers, they can begin at $3,000, but have a very high life expectancy and can improve the safety aspect of your yard which is especially beneficial if you have small kids.
